Before you make a commitment to purchase diving equipment, take a good look at your finances and determine if you can afford to make that type of investment right now. There is nothing wrong with renting equipment if you find that it is a better fit for the budget right now. You may want to save back some money for the equipment rather than taking it out of your monthly income or pick up an extra job for awhile, if you really want to get your own gear.

Purchasing your own equipment is a big investment. Once you have evaluated your finances and also determined that you will get your money's worth out of owning your own equipment, the time will be right. Remember that scuba diving gear is great, as long as it is being used, but not so great when it is collecting dust.
